Dear Mercy Connect Staff,

Over recent weeks, our Mercy Connect family has been sadly impacted by the untimely passing of two participants we have supported for a number of years: Jayden McIntyre and Annabelle McInnes.

Losing participants we have directly served often feels the same as losing family. Times like these are difficult and can challenge our personal sense of purpose and calling. Please know that your efforts, no matter how big or small, have positively influenced these two participants; their lives were enriched because of your time and presence.

Having the opportunity to speak with a number of our staff who directly cared for Jayden and Annabelle, I have been left humbled and impressed by the level of support team members have selflessly given each other, in line with our Values of compassion and teamwork.

The Scriptures speak about times like these, with Matthew 5:4 noting “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”. Catherine McAuley shared practical advice with her fellow Sisters when preparing for her own passing: “Will you tell the Sisters to get a good cup of tea… when I am gone and to comfort another”. Never underestimate the healing power of presence and being available to others. By just listening and sharing a tear or two can be enough. As Maya Angelou said “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
