The story reflects the power of inclusion, friendship, and community participation in supporting wellbeing.
At Mercy Connect, meaningful connections often begin in simple ways. What started as a weekly coffee catch-up between a Participant Welfare Officer and a participant has grown into a vibrant and thriving social network.
These early Thursday morning meetings created a safe and welcoming space where conversation, reflection, and friendship could naturally develop. Over time, the participant expressed interest in exploring more social opportunities beyond their regular catch-ups.
In response, two additional participants were invited to join. This small but thoughtful step marked the beginning of a strong and supportive friendship between the three individuals, built on shared interests, mutual respect, and a genuine sense of connection.
Growing Connections
As their bond strengthened, so did their social calendar. The group embraced a range of activities, including fortnightly dinners, dancing at the Commercial Club, movie nights, and visits to local dining venues.
They also became part of Mercy Connect’s AFL Group, a participant-led initiative focused on coming together to watch AFL games. This involvement further strengthened their sense of belonging and connection within the community.
Supported Every Step of the Way
The consistency of these social connections was made possible through the collaborative support of Mercy Connect staff. When the Participant Welfare Officer was unavailable, Support Workers stepped in to ensure the weekly catch-ups continued without interruption.
This shared commitment highlights the organisation’s focus on participant wellbeing and the importance of maintaining meaningful routines and relationships.
Support workers have played a key role in encouraging continued participation, supporting transport arrangements, and fostering an environment where participants feel confident and supported to engage in their community.
A Social Life That Continues to Grow
What began as a weekly coffee outing has now developed into a regular Wednesday night tradition. The group’s enthusiasm for social engagement continues to grow, with additional activities including attending live music events, tribute shows, and weekend performances.
Their shared interest in music and entertainment has become a central part of their friendship, creating opportunities for joy, laughter, and lasting memories.
The Power of Connection
This story highlights the impact of consistent, compassionate engagement. Through the dedication of staff and the openness of participants to connect, a simple idea has evolved into a strong and supportive social network.
Participants have not only formed meaningful friendships but have also discovered new interests and built a social life filled with connection and enjoyment.
At its heart, this experience reflects what Mercy Connect strives to create every day. Communities where people feel supported, included, and empowered to live fulfilling and connected lives.
